The mansard roof structure was first designed by an architect of the same name in Paris, France. Since property taxes there in the late 1860’s were not calculated on living spaces in attics, he cleverly found a way to shape a roof, the side of which, was nearly vertical. The style caught on in a huge way in all of Europe and in this country afterward.
